Petroleum Jelly

When you’ve got to paint around a whole bunch of hinges, it can get tiresome.  So, take a Q-tip and coat it in petroleum jelly and apply it to the hinges.  You still have to be careful when you paint around the hinge, but when you mess up, it won’t stick, and you won’t have to waste time trying to scrape paint out of hinges with a toothpick.  Click here to read about Tips for Painting Kitchen Cabinets.

Hair Dryer

No, don’t use this to dry the paint.  Use it to help get off the masking tape.  Even when you use the special painter’s tape to mask off certain areas, sometimes it just doesn’t work.  You finish, everything is dried, you pull the masking tape, and it takes a strip of the new paint with it.  Or when you pull on the masking tape, it won’t budge; it just stays there.

Get your hairdryer and put it on low. Hold it about 3 inches away from the tape.  It only takes a couple of minutes to loosen the tape.
